Dr. Cynthia Miller’s Radiance Project is a multi-media art installation that weaves together her art, photography, and a hand-painted kimono with historical documents about her father.
This is a journey that can offer consolation, affirmation and inspiration. Dr. Miller’s life story bears witness to the millions of people who have suffered from the development of nuclear weapons. There is the need for people to hear their story told.
The exhibit’s main components are: Dr. Miller’s original paintings and photographs, photos of the bombs created by her father, documentation of his work on the bombs, a hand-painted kimono, and an area for exhibit attendees to write their thoughts. Historic documents, original newspapers from August 7, 1945, and maps of the 2,000 worldwide nuclear test sites will also be a part of the installation.
Art is a universal language that has the power to transcend and unite us as one human race. The Radiance Project is a platform for creating change in the world.
Kimono
Tetrads
The Radiance Project is comprised of eight tetrads, or groups of four large images. Each of the tetrads contains a bomb photo, photo of Dr Miller’s original art, a flower photo, and a photo of light.
While searching for a word like triptych, (used in fine arts for three panels) to represent the four panels in each grouping in the Radiance Project, the word tetrad came to mind.
In cell biology, a tetrad is a group of four chromatids formed by synapses at the beginning of meiosis. In chemistry, a tetrad is an element, atom, group, or ion with a valency of four. In botany, a tetrad is a group of four cells formed by meiosis from one diploid cell. And finally in ecology, a tetrad is a square of 2 × 2 km used in distribution mapping.
Taking this scientific terminology for a group of four and using it for art, so embodies the multi-level dynamics of the Radiance Project!
