Souls of the Bomb

Souls of the Bomb ~ Dr Cynthia Miller

When I did this painting on March 11, 1999, I got up in the night with energy pulsating through my body, demanding to be expressed. Painting with my hands, not really thinking or focusing on anything but the colors, I never know what will appear on the paper.

Years later, on the Internet, I found this photo of Operation Ivy, King detonated on November 15, 1952. King released ten times the energy of all the previous test bombs combined. It is believed this hydrogen bomb was up to 1,000 times more powerful that the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. My father was there in the South Pacific to witness this explosion.

At first I noticed the similarities of the shapes and colors of my art and the bomb photo. Then I realized that this piece of art is full of faces.

See if you can find the old man with long white nose, closed eyes and pinched lips. Under his nose is the face of a woman looking up.

Now, look inside his head. At the base of his skull, near the neck, is a head and a dark figure. Just above that is a sleeping oriental face, with the head and figure in his jaw. See below.

A head of a man with a beard, a straight mouth and 2 dark eye sockets, is also found in the man with the large nose’s brain.

At the top of the old mans head is another face (it is upside down in the large art piece).

Scream – a face of horror! The right eye of scream holds another face, while the mouth of scream looks like a foot. Above the left eye of scream is another skull.  In the original, scream is below the old man.

On the right above the line, in the pink is a very large skill. On the line are the eyes of a small white skull in the pink, and the entire pink side is another figure.

Above the old man’s head, just resting on the line, slightly to the right is another skull. Above that skull is another skill. Within in this skull is another face. How many more faces can you find?

The effects of this radiation toxicity will be present for generations to come!
